One person was seriously hurt and seven others injured after the explosion at Naval Weapons Station Earle.
Reports indicate ambulances, medical emergency choppers and fire trucks had quickly flooded the base.
The blast happened during what was described as routine boat maintenance and reports say there was no ammunition involved.
The explosion occurred inside one boathouse and was said to have been contained there.
The base provides explosives and ammunition and for ships.
The Navy tweeted that all involved had been taken to the hospital and at least one would be admitted.
Nearly 1,500 people work on the base which is about 45 miles from New York City.
So far there has been no explanation as to what caused the explosion.
