Von Kleist was only 22 years old when he offered to wear a vest loaded with a bomb in order to carry out the plan. Instead Col. Claus von Stauffenberg placed the bomb in a briefcase and put it in the Führer’s office.
The plan failed when someone moved the briefcase and the blast was partially blocked.
The story was brought back into the public eye when Tom Cruise played von Stauffenberg in the 2008 movie “Valkyrie.”
Von Kleist's father was executed after the plan went awry. Von Kleist himself was never found to be a part of the group and survived but was shipped to a concentration camp.
He was later set free and sent to the frontline to fight in the war.
Once it was over he stayed in Germany and became a publisher.
