Jason Carter was charged with killing his mother and stepfather in 2006.
After killing the couple Carter lived with the bodies for three days before being taken into custody.
But he never did jail time after he was found to be not fit to stand trial due to mental illness.
Now Carter has escaped from the mental institution he was sent to and is on the loose.
Cops told WISTV.com Carter got out of the mental health facility in Northeast Richland County on Thursday evening.
The South Carolina Department of Mental Health says Carter had been working in a supply business in the hospital 5ft 10" tall, weighing 165 pounds. He was wearing brown pants, a white jumper and a black coat at the time of his escape.
When Carter was found in 2006 the decaying bodies were found wrapped in plastic and stuffed in the basement.
During hearings Carter’s attorney said his client didn’t remember the crimes at all.
Doctors at the facility said they were convinced the man’s mental health could be well managed with the right medications but it’s not known what he was given at the institution.
Police say they consider Carter to be dangerous.
