IRVING _ Kevin Sumlin made an unscheduled appearance Tuesday at the Cotton Bowl press conference.
A&M was supposed to send its offensive coordinator and standout players. But, the Aggies are without an offensive coordinator after the popular Kliff Kingsbury left last month to become head coach at Texas Tech. So Sumlin appeared Tuesday to fill reporters in about his offense.
Running backs coach Clarence McKinney will call plays Friday against the Sooners. Sumlin wanted McKinney to concentrate on the new assignment rather than chat with reporters.
“We have a lot going on,” Sumlin said. “Obviously we have some meetings that have to take place. Anytime they are with (reporters) that is 45 more minutes that they could be getting better. I thought I would just come out here today.”
Sumlin plans to take all the time he needs to find Kingsbury’s replacement. The coach said Kingsbury was emotional when he told the Aggies he was leaving for Tech, where he was a star quarterback a decade ago.
Receiver Ryan Swope stood up and started to clap, followed by the rest of the team.
