The big news from the 49ers Wednesday practice session was Patrick Willis' hand injury, but there were other tidbits of knowledge worth noting. I've posted the practice reports below, so make sure and check out what the eyewitnesses had to say about performances.
Yesterday's most notable player was probably Nnamdi Asomugha. It sounds like Nnamdi had himself a solid practice, with the writers seeming to agree it was his best day of practice thus far. It was highlighted by an interception of a Colin Kaepernick pass in 7-on-7 drills. Nnamdi reports were generally positive during the offseason workout program, but without the ability to engage in press coverage, and otherwise get physical, it was hard to know what to make of it. The additional positives in training camp are a step in the right direction.
Chris Culliver hauled in an interception as well, picking off a Scott Tolzien pass. He had to leave practice late, as he may be dealing with a right shoulder or pec injury. At one point he had to take off his pads so a trainer could examine him. No further word on his status.
Overall, if you go back through the beat writer practice reports, the four guys battling for cornerback playing time (Nnamdi, Culliver, Rogers, Brown) have all had relatively strong camps. The 49ers receivers are a bit questionable right now, so we'll want to see how the corners perform against actual ones and twos before getting overly excited. That being said, it's certainly better than hearing that the corners are performing poorly.
As it currently stands, it is hard to tell who is necessarily pulling away, and what it means for the depth chart. I would be surprised if Tarell Brown was not in the starting lineup, and it seems like Rogers remains a sizable front-runner to cover the slot receiver. However, when the team is going with two starting corners, will it remain Rogers opposite Brown? When the team goes to three cornerbacks, will it remain Culliver who moves into the lineup, or do we see Nnamdi? Do the 49ers go to more of a rotation? SO MANY QUESTIONS!!
