Gov. Scott set to sign texting while driving bill

Governor Rick Scott is set to sign a bill which bans texting while driving on Tuesday.

State represenative Charles McBurney co-sponsored the bill and says he's glad it passed.

"I am very pleased the governor is signing this legislation which I consider to be very important."

Governor Scott released a statement saying the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor day are typically the deadliest days on the road for teenagers. Scott says he hopes the new law keeps teenagers and adults safe on the road.

McBurney says parents and teens need to have discussions about texting while driving.

"Having this legislation tells teens and allows parents to tell teens don't text while you're driving."

McBurney believes the new law will reduce the number of accidents on the road. He says studies indicate in other cities where texting bans were enforced, it impacted the number of overall traffic crashes.

The law makes text messaging, emailing and instant messaging a secondary offense in Florida. This means officers would have to pull drivers over for another offense first.
