1st of 3 Ships Headed to Mayport

The U.S. Navy is following through on promises to bring more ships to Mayport. Right now, the U.S.S. New York is headed to the First Coast.

We now know the ship will make its homeport shift to Mayport by December 1, 2013. It will bring 31 officers and more than 300 sailors and their families to the area. Congressman Ander Crenshaw says he's excited about what this means for the local economy.

“As Congress deals with very difficult budget decisions, this is promising news for national security and the First Coast,” said Crenshaw.

The U.S.S. New York is one of three ships in the Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) including the U.S.S Iwo Jima and the U.S.S. Fort McHenry. The U.S.S. Iwo Jima and U.S.S. Fort McHenry are scheduled to make it to Mayport by 2015.
