AFSCME pension deal could have big savings if other unions sign on

Jacksonville and city workers have reached a tentative deal on retirement reform.

The Mayor’s Office says a deal struck with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is a big money saver if it’s a plan other general employee unions can agree on.  There are meetings later this week with the Jacksonville Supervisors Association, Laborers international Union of North America and Communications Workers of America. If all four unions agree on the deal it’s estimated to save $600 million over 30 years.

The AFSCME agreement requires current AFSCME members to contribute more to the pension plan. There will also be modified benefits for new members.  You can see a breakdown of those benefits attached to the left.

The deal now goes to City Council and AFSCME membership for a vote.
