Black Creek hits record flooding following Hurricane Irma

Jacksonville, Fl. — The Clay County Emergency Management says both the north and south prongs of Black Creek are now at record flood stage at 26.5 feet and expect to crest early Tuesday up to 28.5 feet.

Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels and his crew went to assess the damage on Monday, and mentioned one of the deputies dove into the flooded water and saved a woman. Daniels says one of that woman’s family members got swept away, and they still do not know where that person is.

"We'll continue our efforts until we feel like we've helped all the folks who can be helped or in need of help."

Various local, state and federal agencies are engaged in water rescue efforts including but not limited to the State Fire Marshal, swift water rescue, the Florida National Guard, US Coast Guard, and others. Sheriff Daniels said he and his crew rescued multiple people that he couldn’t put a number on it.

Strong winds, flooding, downed trees and power lines are major concerns in the area. Residents should stay in their homes or at a shelter during the curfew which is in effect from 8 p.m. Monday night until 6 a.m Tuesday.

"It was swollen like houses have flooded, people have called in and said they have lost everything."

Clay County Emergency Management says they will be deploying their disaster assessment teams as soon as it is safe to do. Until then, if you can safely take a picture of downed trees in the road and property damage and send them along with your name and address to Emergency.Management@claycountygov.com

You are urged to not go near downed trees as a power line may be hidden within the tree and could electrocute you. If you see a downed power line, call 911. Remember “Turn Around and Don’t Down” in flooded areas.

Clay Electric Cooperative stated that 86% of the country is without power. Clay Electric Cooperative is asking residents to be prepared to go without power for a week or longer.
