Boy’s death leaves unanswered questions

Family and neighbors are mourning the loss of a 7-year-old.  Police found Brailand McCray dead inside his bedroom Saturday night near Springfield.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the death was “unnatural,” but has not released the cause.

Officers responded to 1273 N. Broad St. around 7:45 p.m. to find the deceased boy inside his room, according to JSO.

JSO said the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner and will be released when the investigation is finished.

Neighbors said they were shocked to hear about the McCray's death.

"It's very alarming to me because I have six kids. When I heard the situation I was like that could've been my son,” said neighbor Tialia Parkinson.

WOKV reached out to JSO asking when the investigation is expected to be completed.  JSO responded around 8:15 a.m. Monday saying all media outlets will be notified when there is new information.

John Harrell with the Department of Children and Families told WOKV Tuesday morning that DCF was involved in the investigation as of late Monday.  He could not release whether case workers have investigated McCray’s family in the past because of privacy issues.

Neighbors said police took the boy’s mother in for questioning.
