Jacksonville, FL - It’s an opportunity for you to make your streets safer and get paid in the process.
After re-launching the Gun Bounty program last month, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is hosting its first Gun Buyback this weekend.
“One of the big things about owning a firearm is responsible gun ownership, and if you have something in your home like a firearm that you want to get rid of, we give people an opportunity to do that,” says JSO Homeland Security Chief of Investigations Mike Williams.
From 10 AM to 2 PM Saturday, you can drop off a gun at the Elks Lodge at 712 W Duval St, no questions asked. Williams says this event specifically isn’t designed to get anyone in trouble with the law, but just give you an easy way to get a gun you don’t want off the street.
“They don’t want to entertain buyers, they don’t want to put it on Craigslist, try to sell it that way- we’ll give them a one-shot opportunity to bring it in and drop it off,” he says.
The gun needs to be unloaded and in the trunk of your vehicle. Police will take it, disarm it, and then you will be given $50 for each firearm.
This event is really just one part of the greater Gun Bounty program, where you are eligible for a $1,000 reward if you call in a tip about an illegal gun on the street. The tip is anonymous, and Williams tells me the information they’ve received just in the past month has already led to a few arrests.
But he says that really does start with you.
“We need the community’s involvement, we need then to get involved to help us do our job and help us keep the community safe,” Williams says.
He says beyond increasing safety in your neighborhoods, he hopes the program is helping to make the community more vocal and aware of illegal guns and gun violence.
