City and firefighters reach tentative deal

The City of Jacksonville and Jacksonville Association of Firefighters have reached a tentative three year contract now waiting on union membership and City Council approval.

The deal would extend a 2% pay reduction and a 5% health care contribution set to expire at the end of next month.  The deal now brings those through September 30, 2015.  The contract also promises no layoffs or demotions except for disciplinary reasons.  The fire chief also gains the ability to limit leave time subject to certain requirements.

Because the firefighters were expecting a pay hike this year, the city says the new contract is a $6 million savings for taxpayers.  The mayor endorses the deal as a “new and innovative solution.”

If approved the contract will take effect October 1, 2012.
