City rakes in nearly half million from red light cameras

Since the red light cameras went up at 18 intersections in Jacksonville in February the city has been bringing in plenty of revenue.

With each violation costing $158 and going up to $274 if it's not paid in 30 days, Jacksonville has managed to rake in $477,000 from the cameras.

The city pays RedFlex, the company that installs the cameras, about $4,000 per month for each camera in Jacksonville.  It totals about $72,000.

Violators are charged $158 for a violation and they get a notice in the mail with a link to video of the violation.  Don't pay within 30 days and it becomes a $274 ticket. 

By May 30, the Florida Times-Union reports cameras caught drivers running red lights about 9,900 times.

WOKV is working on finding out if the crash statistics at the intersections wtih cameras have reduced since the cameras have been installed.
