Clay County convenience store catches fire

Firefighters put out a fire at a convenience store near Melrose.

Clay County Fire Rescue reports the call came in just before 4 a.m. from Nick's Kwik Stop at 8800 State Road 21. They said the fire was fully engulfed when they arrived. Firefighters got control of the fire around 4:20 a.m. Power lines are down in the area.

Fire crews from both Clay and Putnam County responded to the scene.

No injuries have been reported. The building is being called a total loss.

The fire is being called suspicious in nature and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police said they searched the house and found the rifle, which they believe to be the murder weapon, in Tyler Swantek’s bedroom. There were a number of candles and air fresheners in the house, apparently put out in an attempt to mask the smell, the Standard-Speaker reported. Police said that when they interviewed Tyler Swantek about his father’s death, he showed no emotion. An autopsy report suggested that the body may have been on the couch for months before it was discovered.
