Clay County veteran dies in skydiving accident

A Keystone Heights man is dead from an apparent skydiving accident.

Palatka Police do not suspect foul play in 72-year-old Lawrence Elmore’s death, however they continue to investigate why his chute did not deploy during a weekend jump.

Elmore had more than 6,000 jumps to him name and over 20 years of experience skydiving. In fact, a Youtube video posted on Skydive Palatka's Facebook page shows Elmore diving 72 times to commemorate his 70th birthday in 2011. It says he also did 60 jumps on his 60th birthday.

People on the ground watched in horror Saturday as Elmore fell during a dive where his chute didn’t open.  He was on a routine jump.

The US Navy veteran leaves behind two adult children.
