Storms in Putnam County caused damage and delayed students leaving school on Thursday afternoon.
The Sonic on State Road 19 sustained damage to its roof as a result of the storm. Action News' Leslie Coursey is in Palatka to learn more about the extent of the damage. Residents made sure to get out of the way of the storm.
"Just watching the weather, we heard it was about six miles south of Hollister headed this way, northeast," said witness John Wisker. "So, we just sort of took cover."
Putnam County, along with St. Johns and Flagler Counties were under a tornado warning from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. School officials in Putnam kept students at school during the duration of the warning.
Parents who went to pick up students at schools were directed into the gymnasium. Students tried to remain calm during the extra half-hour that they were held at school.
"I tried to keep my mind off of that as much as I could, because I didn't want to think, 'Oh my God, am I going to die today?'" said Palatka High School senior Nicole Reynolds.
