Patrick Haven has been around boats for almost 40 years. And with Tropical Storm Arthur now off Northeast Florida's coast, he knows he needs to secure his boats now.
“If you have your boat in the water, you definitely want to get some extra lines tied to extra cleats,” said Haven.
The U.S. Coast Guard agrees. A spokesperson said boats not secured during a storm end up drifting away.
They say the Coast Guard then has to deal with them.
“After the storm, we see boats that have broken free of their mooring lines or debris in the water, which we get called on and don't know if people are in distress or not,” said Kathryn Weber.
Haven said it’s better to take the time to gear up now than risk losing your boat.
The Coast Guard said it will have staff ready to respond if needed.
