JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A quick-thinking Westside daycare owner says a masked gunman held her up and threatened to kill the children she was watching on Wednesday morning.
"I'm glad to be here to tell the story because anything could have went the opposite way," says Kids in Motion Learning Academy owner Meltonia Wright tells our partner Action News.
Wright says a gunman demanded money from her in the parking lot of the daycare on McDuff Avenue in the Lackawanna neighborhood. With the barrel of a gun resting against her head, she says all she could think about was the children in Newtown.
"My first priority is the safety of the children and I did the best of my ability to make sure that happened," says Wright.
She says she was able to remain calm and trick the gunman into letting her go inside the daycare to get money from her purse. Once inside, Wright says she locked the door, got the children away from the windows, and called 9-1-1.
"And I'm hollerin', you know, 'lockdown! Lockdown! Code red! Code red!'"
The suspect fled before police arrived. However, they say a surveillance camera at a credit union across the street caught a suspicious vehicle. Police were looking for a white Chevy Suburban.
