A round of layoffs are coming to Duval County Public Schools.

DCPS will be making job cuts to administrative and non-administrative positions at the district level. Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti tells WOKV the elimination of jobs will help create a “layer of management.”

The employees who face losing their jobs will be given the opportunity to apply to go back to schools as teachers or administrators.

“A lot of those 250 individuals would be absorbed into lower level positions so they would make less and have less responsibility,” says Vitti.

Vitti says the employees who were strong principals in the past and were then promoted to the district level will return back to the schools.  Their presence and past experience will help increase the quality of leaderships in schools.

“I think it will strengthen our pool of principals, and principals are just as important as teachers are when they’re running schools. They’re the educational leaders of the community,” says Vitti.

By returning former principals to the school, he also hopes they will serve as hands-on mentors to the next generation of school leaders.

Vitti says the layoffs will limit the number of dollars at the district level and move that money into the schools.
