Donald Smith, the man accused of killing 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle, pleaded not guilty Tuesday at an arraignment.
Wearing orange jail clothing and flip flops and glasses, Smith made a brief appearance before Judge Mallory Cooper.
Smith pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, sexual battery, and murder.
The 56-year-old did not say anything. His public defender entered the not guilty plea. He is being held without bail.
The judge scheduled a pre-trial hearing for September 4th.
Smith was arrested in a dramatic traffic stop on I-95 near I-10 less than 12 hours after Cherish was abducted.
