Driver in critical condition after hitting utility pole

We’ve learned more information about the accident which shut down part of University Blvd early this morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol says 23-year-old Sydney E. Hixon, of Ponte Vedra Beach, was driving eastbound on university at a high speed before traveling in to the right shoulder and hitting a concrete utility pole near the intersection with I-95.

The road was closed temporarily because of the risk of the pole falling in to the roadway.

At last check, Hixon remains in critical condition at Shands Jacksonville.

FHP says charges are pending further investigation. It is unknown at this time if  alcohol was involved.
