Florida-Georgia revenue experiences year-to-year increase

In a year-to-year analysis, the annual Florida-Georgia football game has increased its economic impact by $2 million, yet questions still remain as to whether or not the game will stay on the First Coast.

The contract is entering its final year of the contract with both schools. Jacksonville has hosted the game for 82 consecutive years.

According to a report released by the City, 140,000 tourists spent the game weekend in Jacksonville hotels. This translates into more than 37,000 rooms and $3.6 million in total revenue; topping last year’s mark by $200,000.

Only the television ratings took a dip from the released information with a drop in about 700,000 national viewers.

“The positive results from the annual Florida-Georgia game underscore the importance of this even to our community,” said Mayor Lenny Curry in a statement. “This even drives economic impact benefits and amplifies our community as a leading destination for major events.”

Jacksonville’s city council unanimously approved a plan to split the bill on $90 million worth of improvements in and around EverBank Field, which may be just enough to bring the game back for years to come.

Dave Harrell, the City of Jacksonville’s sports and entertainment officer, tells WOKV discussions will likely take place with University of Florida and University of Georgia officials after the first of the year. All sides have agreed to talk about the next steps after the bowl season.
