Just about one week after first considering the legislation, the Florida House has overwhelmingly passed a bill essentially banning internet cafes.
The entire Northeast Florida delegation supported the measure, which passed on a 108-7 margin.
The bill faced little objection when working through committee. The two main concerns have been the speed lawmakers are working and the potential impact on jobs. Despite that, there is still a lot of momentum carrying the bill in to the state Senate, which may vote next week.
While Florida Governor Rick Scott has shown support for action against internet cafes, he has been quoted several times as saying he needs to review this specific legislation before committing to whether he will sign it. WOKV requested a statement specifically on whether the Governor would sign the law and received the following comment through email.
“After last week's news, everything must be on the table to eliminate illegal gaming in Florida. The House is off to a good start.”- Melissa Sellers, Communication Director for Gov. Rick Scott
