"In God We Trust" on county seal for Clay?

A proposal that would add the words "In God We Trust" to the official seal of Clay county will go before county commissioners Tuesday. Those words can already be found on the seals of the Clay County School District and the Sheriff's Office as well as license plates all over the state.

Former Keystone Heights mayor Lyndel Hale is behind the proposal and he tells our partner Action News the United States was a religious country long before he was alive but that the idea is not to alienate any one person or group of people.

"You still have the freedom to choose what you want to believe, in your God," says Hale.

Residents gave mixed reviews of the idea.

"I think it's an excellent idea.  We have it on our money and no one has a problem spending our money," says resident Rhonda Treen.

But others like Alyssa Barber say that religion and politics shouldn't be one in the same.

"Religion doesn't belong in politics.  It should be two separate things."

"In God We Trust" became the national motto in 1956.
