Hurricane Matthew debris cleanup crews damage 80 collection sites in Jax

The Hurricane Matthew debris cleanup in Jacksonville is done, but the contractor still has a lot of work left to repair damage done by their cleanup crews.

WOKV has confirmed about 80 damage reports have been filed in connection to the debris cleanup work. JB Coxwell Contracting, who is performing the cleanup, would not confirm the extent of the damage reports or how much it will cost to do the repairs. Photos from a listener who reported damage in the San Jose Forest area show cracks on the road and impact on a curb. The City of Jacksonville says it is on the contractor to take care of and fund the repairs.

“The contractor remains available of and committed to the mayor’s expectations for quick, responsive and safe collection efforts,” says a statement from Jacksonville’s Director of Public Affairs Marsha Oliver.

The timeline for the repairs is also not yet clear. The City of Jacksonville confirmed last week that their “comprehensive” debris collection relating to the storm is done. The San Jose Forest resident tells WOKV he reported the damage near his home more than a month ago, and while a construction warning tent was put up a few days after his report, actual repair work didn’t start until this past Saturday.

“We are working diligently to bring this project to completion,” says a statement from JB Coxwell Contracting, Inc. Director of Safety and Loss Prevention Alfred “Buddy” Lee.

Lee further says their debris collection efforts have been a “monumental task”, and they’ll continue the partnership with the City to get things back to normal as soon as possible.
