NW Jax firehouse hit by bullet

Jacksonville firefighters are not strangers to seeing bullet holes, but a Northwest Jacksonville crew had a shock when they found a hole in their own building today.

WOKV has learned the firehouse on Division Street was hit by a bullet overnight. The bullet went through a window and hit a chair in the dayroom, which the Jacksonville Association of Fire Fighters says is normally very busy. They discovered the damage earlier today when doing maintenance work on the building.

“Makes you take pause to think ‘Wow, if somebody was sitting there, they would have actually been shot’,” says JAFF President Randy Wyse.

Firefighters say there was no hole in the chair last night, so they believe the gunfire happened overnight. The building was occupied, but the firefighters were likely sleeping in the back and the shooting happened in the front of the building, according to Wyse.

“It kind of hits home sometimes when it’s where you live for a third of your life,” he says.

JSO is investigating. Wyse says the damage is confined to the window and chair.
