Jacksonville, FL - A detective with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office burglary unit has been charged with attacking his wife and father-in-law.
Clay County deputies arrived at the home of 35-year-old John Leland Townsend late Friday in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigator found Townsend in his driveway “extremely intoxicated”, according to the CCSO report. The investigator says he “could smell a strong odor of alcoholic beverages” on Townsend’s breath and that Townsend was mumbling and difficult to understand.
Based on conversations with Townsend’s wife, Tiffany; father-in-law, Anthony Martin; and mother-in-law, Margaret Martin, CCSO found that an argument started over the couple’s dogs. Townsend then became “belligerent and verbally abusive” because he had been drinking, according to the report. He then complained about his sex life with his wife to his father-in-law. The report says Tiffany Townsend told her parents this is how her husband generally acts when he has been drinking.
She also mentioned incidents in the last where Townsend pulled out a gun and pointed it at her or himself. CCSO has no record of such a prior incident, but took a separate report dealing with that on the night of this response. We’ve obtained that report, but it is heavily redacted because of the ongoing investigation.
Upon hearing that allegation, however, CCSO says Anthony Martin cursed about Townsend, at which point Townsend allegedly charged at Martin and Tiffany Townsend.
Tiffany Townsend was not injured, Martin was injured above his left eye. He told investigators he took Townsend to the ground and sat on him while his wife called police. Townsend allegedly kept yelling and punching, at one point screaming “my life is over”. Martin let Townsend up and then locked him out of the home.
While being questioned, the report says Townsend ran up the stairs in the home, refusing to stop when ordered. Martin warned deputies that Townsend had a gun in his bedroom, so investigators cut him off from the room and put him in a patrol car for the remainder of the questioning.
Townsend is charged with simple domestic assault on his wife, simple assault on his father-in-law, and resisting an officer without violence. The related report stemming from the allegation Townsend has pointed a gun at his wife in the past also lists aggravated assault.
Townsend agreed to answer CCSO questions, however what he said is redacted from the reports.
He has bonded out of jail for $752.
Townsend has been with JSO for nearly 15 years. WOKV obtained a record of his employment history, which shows no sustained complaints about his conduct on the job. JSO says Townsend has been put in an administrative position pending the outcome of this criminal investigation.
