Neptune Beach, Fl. - A proposed ordinance has a lot of people talking on the First Coast.
It would allow Neptune Beach police to cite a person who curses if the profanity led to a fight.
WOKV and WAPE’s Mark Kaye talked about the ordinance on his show Sunday night and had several listeners wanting to weigh in on the controversial topic.
“I’m for it, if it’s somewhere that has a lot of kids present,” one man called in and said. “I mean I don’t want to hear (cursing) at a little children’s book reading or something like that.”
The man later said he could see where the ordinance could be hard to enforce and is afraid people would get “nitpicky.”
A person could only be cited if the officer witnessed the fight following the profanity.
Another woman called the ordinance ridiculous and feared it would take away her rights.
“I think it’s a clear violation of our freedom of speech,” she said Sunday.
Another man suggested the ordinance should be revised to only cite someone if he or she was cursing around minors.
The ordinance is set to be discussed Monday night at the Neptune Beach Council Chambers. The workshop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at 116 First Street.
