Local church twice "devastated" by storms is cleaning up once again

After Saturday storms tear a hole in the roof of a Northside church, the cleanup is on again today.

“Three quarters of our building was just devastated,” says North Main Street Baptist Church Pastor Nick Phoenix.

Phoenix says when he got to the church this past Sunday, he found a tree had caused multiple holes in the roof, letting in some two inches of rain. They spent most of that day mopping up the water and on Monday, roof repair workers came to put some patches on.

But those temporary fixes were no match for storms that hit late Monday in to early Tuesday.

“All the water that we cleaned up is basically there again,” he says.

Roofers are back at the church today, along with volunteers trying to help with the cleanup. Phoenix says it’s unfortunate to have something like this happen, but it’s nice to see Jacksonville come together to fix it.

“We’ll suck up one gallon of water at a time and we’ll eventually get it,” he says.

One volunteer set up an emergency relief fund at Vystar to which you can donate if you want to help their efforts. If you are interested in volunteering with the cleanup itself, you can reach Phoenix at 904-742-6425.
