Local Navy veteran killed in Westside hit and run crash

Twenty-year retired Navy veteran Roy McGrath was celebrating St. Patrick's Day when he was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver at the intersection of Cassatt Avenue and Freemont Street.

The accident took place at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday while McGrath was riding his bike. His family tells our partner CBS 47/Fox 30 Action News he was only minutes away from home.

"I don't know how someone would live with themself doing that. Knowing that you killed somebody in the streets like a dog and just go on about your business like nothing happened," said his son, Roy McGrath II.

The father of three was down on his luck recently.

His family says his regular bike, equipped with lights and reflectors, was stolen a few days ago. Not to mention, this local veteran had also recently lost his home.

According to the family, investigators may have the clues they need to find this local veteran's killer. So far the JSO has not released any information about a suspect vehicle.

A full investigation is ongoing. Police are asking for the public's help in this case. If you know anything that can help find that driver, call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
