Local veteran relieved shutdown ends

We're hearing from a local veteran who is relieved the shutdown has ended which means he can now expect to receive his VA benefits on time.

Patrick Petty is a homeless veteran living at the 5 Star Veterans center. He's tells WOKV he served in the U.S. Marine Corp. Petty says he needs every dollar he receives from his VA benefits to pay his bills.

"That's the only money I'm able to survive on."

Petty says he missed his October 1st check. He says his phone was shut off and he wasn't able to provide support for his family.
He tells us he is breathing a sigh of relief for the next few months before the budget compromise expires in January 15. He plans to save all of his funds so that he can obtain permanent housing and support himself.
