Police say the detective was taking his teenage son to school in March 2016, when he saw an individual, later identified as Kevin Rojas, driving erratically on Collins Road.
When the detective pulled him over, investigators say Rojas started shooting as soon as he got out of the car, hitting the detective three times, including in the head.
The JSO detective, thankfully, survived the shooting; his son was not hurt.

After the shooting, the original arrest report says Rojas ran from the scene, stole a running Ford F-350 truck, and ran it into a neighbor's house, before going into his own home.
Rojas, who was 19 at the time, aimed a gun at two officers once at the home, with both of them firing back. He was hit multiple times and was treated at a hospital before going to jail.
As to what motivated the shooting, investigators believe he may have been trying to commit suicide by cop, after getting into a fight with his girlfriend.
