Middleburg-based roofing company faces $22,000 in OSHA penalties after heat-related death of worker

Jacksonville, FL — A Middleburg-based roofing company is facing more than $22,000 in penalties in connection to the death of one of their employees.

The US Department of Labor's Occupational and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited Southeastern Subcontractors Inc. for failing to protect employees from the dangers of working outdoors in extreme heat, after an employee died from hyperthermia while working at a residential site in Jacksonville. At this time, it’s not clear when or exactly where this incident occurred.

OSHA has issued one serious citation to the company for exposing employees to heat-related injuries and another violation of failing to report a workplace death to OSHA within 8 hours. OSHA describes that violation as ‘other-than-serious.’

Brian Sturteckly, OSHA Jacksonville Area Office Director, releasing the following statement, "Tragedies such as these can be prevented if employers develop and implement a heat illness prevention program, and provide employees with water, rest, and shade."

Southeastern Subcontractors Inc. now has 15 business days to either comply with the penalties, request an informal conference with OSHA's area director, or contest the findings before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
