Jacksonville, FL - It’s a good day for college sports fans on the First Coast- Jacksonville has been awarded the 2016 SEC Women’s Basketball Championship.
City leadership says the announcement shows the growing confidence that Jacksonville can be a sports and entertainment destination.
“It’s another step forward to what we are hopefully going to be able to accomplish long term,” says Jacksonville Sports Council Executive Director Alan Verlander.
The championship will consist of 14 teams and their fan bases converging in Jacksonville’s Veterans Memorial Arena.
“More people being in our hotels, supporting our restaurants, our small businesses, our entrepreneurs,” says Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown.
Brown expects the economic impact of the game to be about $5 million.
Jacksonville hosted rounds of the 2006 and 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and will host again in 2015. There will also be a women’s basketball event involving two SEC teams in November 2015. More information on these games will be available at a later time.
