Naval Station Mayport issues message to families, "very well prepared" for Irma

Jacksonville, FL — As Hurricane Irma begins her climb up the state of Florida, the commanding officer of Naval Station Mayport, Captain David Yoder says they're well prepared.

"We're very well prepared for the onset of heavy weather associated with Hurricane Irma. There's no significant damage at this time to the installation. We'll keep families in the Naval Station Mayport team posted at the storm and situation progresses," says Yoder.

He also has a message for families who didn't evacuated and stayed on bases.

Yoder says, "As the storm comes on, the best thing for them to do would be to stay inside, shelter inside a building through storm passage. Then allow our damage assessment teams to get out and take a look, before they go out and about the installation."

If you are a Naval Station Mayport family, you'll be able to find updates on what's happening on their Facebook page, or if you're registered for their AtHoc notification system, they will send out AtHoc notifications.

Their public-private venture housing partner, Balfour Beatty, will also send out notifications to on-base housing residents.
