Denise Marzullo CEO of Mental Health America of NE Florida says the public needs to start looking at mental health disorders as a disease.
"We're kind of forced to be educated about it now because it's happening so much."
Marzullo says there is a stigma attached to mental disorders. But she says the public should be educated about the signs and symptoms of people who suffer from mental health issues. She says if your loved one is showing signs of paranoia or mental illness you need to get them help.
"Offer them support, try to encourage them to get help."
Law enforcement officials contend 34-year-old Aaron Alexis suffered from post traumatic stress, paranoia and heard voices. If the Navy had declared him to be mentally unfit, he would have lost the security clearance police say he used to gain access into the Washington Navy Yard. 12 people were killed in the shooting rampage.
