Nightly resurfacing project set to begin on Blanding Boulevard

The Florida Department of Transportation is set to start a $4.9 million construction project on Blanding Boulevard this week.
“The project is resurfacing almost five miles,” FDOT public information specialist Laurie Sanderson said.
Both directions of Blanding Boulevard between Kingsley Avenue and Knight Boxx Road will be impacted.
In addition to resurfacing the road, the project will also fix drainage problems, repair sidewalks and improve traffic light cycles, according to Sanderson.
FDOT does not plan on closing lanes during rush hour when the most drivers are on the road.

“Construction will generally be from 8 p.m. until 7 a.m. at the latest," she said.

The improvements are part of a five-year work program in which new projects are identified and within five years will be funded by putting money aside every year, said Sanderson.
“By the end of the five years, the project has full funding,” she said.
Blanding Boulevard is one of the two major roadways commuters take to get into Duval County from Clay County.  U.S. 17 is the other major road. About 140,000 vehicles use either Blanding Boulevard or U.S. 17 everyday between Kingsley Avenue and I-295.
There is also nightly construction taking place on U.S. 17.  Sanderson said that project is expected to finish in the Fall.
The Blanding project is expected to finish in the Spring of 2015. Sanderson said there is an incentive to encourage the contractor to finish early.
