Jacksonville, FL - We’ve learned one man is dead from police gunfire after what seems to be an escalation in domestic violence, and the officer behind the trigger has been in tough situations before.
JSO Chief Tom Hackney tells us three officers were driving an unmarked car on Lem Turner following a SWAT training. They noticed a truck drive past them and intentionally ram in to a car multiple times, driving it off the road. The truck itself flipped on to its side.
At that time, Hackney says the woman exited her car and told officers the man in the car is her ex-husband and he was trying to kill her. The officers took this as a serious threat, given they had witnessed him drive in to her car.
The car had flipped on to the driver’s side when police approached and told him to stay where he was. They also noticed a gun that was near his head, within reaching distance. For several minutes, Hackney says the man complied with the officers and was responsive, but then he suddenly reached for the gun.
That drew ten year veteran Officer Jared Reston to fire multiple shots at the man, and he was pronounced dead on the scene. Reston has been involved in three officer-involved shootings during his service. During one, he was shot multiple times by a shoplifter but was able to return fire despite his injuries. You can see the history of that incident to the left.
Reston has been placed on administrative leave, per police policy.
The woman in the car was not injured. Police have not yet confirmed the identities of those involved, but believe it was a couple with a history of domestic violence complaints, and even an arrest, against the husband.
