Pedestrian hit by Jacksonville Sheriff's Office cruiser

One person was sent to the hospital after a Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer in a patrol car struck the pedestrian walking near downtown.  That person has non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

A JSO spokesman tells our partner Action News that Officer Kim Porter was off duty after just ending her shift when she struck the pedestrian in the road.  Police report it was unclear who was at fault. There is a sidewalk but no crosswalk in the area where it happened, at an I-95 on-ramp from Kings Road.

Porter, police said, was headed eastbound on Kings Road when the collission happened around 9p.m.  JSO did not identify the pedestrian.

The spokesman reported the investigation is ongoing.

JSO did not specify if Officer Porter is on administrative leave pending the investigation. Standard procedure, the spokesman told Action News, is to make that decision on a case-by-case basis in situations where there is not an officer-involved shooting. That decision could come at the conclusion of the investigation. Police shootings result in immediate and indefinite paid administrative leave for the officer per JSO department policy.
