JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
From our partner Action News:
An elderly man is fighting for his life after he was knocked off his motorized scooter on the sidewalk Monday morning.
Police are calling it a hit and run and they're searching for a semi truck driver. They're looking for a red semi with a white box trailer.
"It was pretty scary," said witness Robin Troup.
Troup was one of the first to this street corner moments after the victim was hit and knocked to the ground.
"He was laying out on the sidewalk," said Troup. "He was just laying there so I'm assuming he was unconscious."
Troup immediately grabbed her phone and called 911. Police told Action News the man was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries. They're calling it a hit and run, saying while the man waited at the corner of Pearl and 8th Streets to cross, a semi truck attempted to turn onto Pearl. Police said the truck's rear tires jumped the curb and hit the man. Action News is told the driver may not even be aware of what happened.
"That terrifies me," said Sheila Forrester of the incident.
Forrester rides a similar scooter. She told Action News close calls crossing the road are daily occurrences in this area.
"They don't notice you. You have to watch for them," Forrester said.
Troup said the intersection has lots of truck traffic. She said most of the drivers struggle to make the turn.
"It's not a very wide street, I would say, in order for them to make a turn but yeah it has posed a problem sometimes," said Troup.
Our cameras caught several large vehicles having a tough time. But Monday's tragedy is enough to make Forrester change her riding habits.
"I'll just pay more attention and put it on me instead of them having to watch. We watch the lights but now I'm going to have to watch the people and the lights," Forrester said.
The search is now on for red semi with a white box trailer. Anyone with information is urged to call police.
