Power outage at Regency Square Mall, JSO Substation

A power outage at the Regency Square Mall Wednesday night left both shoppers and police in limbo.

Each JSO officer's patrol car turned into an office space for the night.  An officer stationed there told Action News they even had to have roll call at JC Penney, one of the few areas where the lights were still on.

The outage left would-be shoppers in limbo.  "My son wanted a pair of slides but the Champs were closed," said shopper Sharon Starke.

Champs was one of dozens of other retail stores in the dark, with no heat or electricity for at least eight hours. Joey Hendricks was one of only a handful of mall employees allowed to go home. She said the lights kept flickering before everything finally shut off.

"There was a fire going on in the grids or something, that's what I heard, that there was some kind of an explosion. The power has been off ever since then. It came back on for a second and went right back off," said Hendricks.

A JEA spokesperson told Action News that a connection in the mall's switchboard blew out. What triggered it has not been revealed yet.
