Robbery suspect shot after targeting Westside grocery store

A robbery suspect was shot by a grocery store owner on Jacksonville's westside.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the suspect entered the Holiday grocery store on Shindler Drive around 9 p.m. Sunday.

The suspect allegedly came into the store with a bag over his hand singaling that he had a gun. Police then say the man jumped the counter and demanded money from a store clerk.

The owner of the store then came out of a back room and shot the suspect in the chest.

The suspect managed to escape the store with some cash but collapsed close to the scene.

The suspect was transferred to UF Health & Shands Jacksonville with non-life threatening injuries.

The money was returned to the store owner.

Police are searching for the gun used in the robbery. There is still no word on whether this robbery was tied to a string of others over the weekend.

WOKV has reached out to the store owner and we are waiting to hear back.
