Jacksonville, FL - There’s a new scam surfacing in Jacksonville that deals with some of your personal information.
The Jacksonville Better Business Bureau has received a report from a woman who got a phone call about a class action medical lawsuit settlement. The caller claimed that the victim has received $25,000 as part of the settlement, and she only needed to pay them $150 in fees to get the money.
“You put the $150 on the [green dot] card and give them the number, you’ll never see it or the $25,000,” says Northeast Florida/Southeast Georgia BBB President Tom Stephens.
He admits that the scam is slightly more believable because the scammer knows about a prior medical procedure the victim had. Specifically with this caller, the scammer knew the victim had a bladder sling surgery and claimed the settlement dealt with that.
“The must have bought a list of patients somewhere or hacked in to a hospital computer,” he says.
The red flag, according to Stephens, is using the green dot card.
“There’s about a 110% chance that it’s a scam,” Stephens says.
Further, Stephens says you must consent to be a part of a class action lawsuit, so you would know ahead of a settlement whether you should expect any kind of payout.
