Jacksonville, FL - It goes against every instinct you have, but if you see a missed call on your phone- especially an international number- don’t call back.
“They [scammers] bought lists of random phone numbers and they’re just robo-calling to see if anybody will fall for it,” says Northeast Florida Better Business Bureau President Tom Stephens.
Within the last day or two, Stephens says they’ve received a few complaints from people getting a call that rings once on their phone, and then hangs up. If you call that number back, however, you will only hear music or advertisements.
“All at the tune of $19.95 for a connection charge and $9/minute for the call,” Stephens says.
While he says phone companies are normally willing to work with you on the charge if you contact them quickly after the call, it can be difficult to fight the charge if you don’t see it until you get your bill, maybe weeks later.
Stephens says this is a random and nation-wide scam. You should be wary of any international calls and, when in doubt, do not return a missed call for a number you don’t know.
