Sheriff John Rutherford sat down for a one-on-one with the city's special budget analysis committee Wednesday to reveal his proposal to add more officers to the street.
City councilman Clay Yarborough says he's asking for 40 more police officers and 40 community service officers.
"To meet the demands, he says, of increasing public safety demands in the community."
It comes at a price tag of eight million dollars but Yarborough tells WOKV each year, the Sheriff normally has money left over in his budget.
"We have historically given that back to him, if he saved that money in his budget."
They discussed whether the Sheriff would have a surplus at the end of 2014. Yarborough says Rutheford told him he didn't have final numbers yet, this early in the fiscal year. Yarborough says whether he does or doesn't have a surplus, they'll have to find a way to factor in the new request.
