Six dead in separate crashes on I-95

Six people are dead following crashes on I-95 in St. Johns and Flagler Counties.

It all started Saturday around 5:30 p.m. on I-95 south of Palm Coast Parkway.  Two people were killed in a crash when a Chevy 1500 left the northbound lanes and hit the guardrail.

The truck went airborne, over the guardrail and onto southbound lanes of I-95.  While airborne, the truck hit the top of a car, killing the driver Pamela Thor of St. Augustine.

The passenger in the truck, 17-year-old Michael Benjamin Chance Smith, died as a result of the crash.  The driver of the truck, 38-year-old Roy White of Jacksonville, had minor injuries.

Florida Highway Patrol said charges are pending.

The second crash happened around 7:30 p.m. near mile marker 301 in St. Johns County as traffic was backed up from the crash in Palm Coast.

FHP said at least eight passenger vehicles, and three commercial motor vehicles were involved.  At least four people died in the chain reaction crash.

The accident report released from FHP showed Barbara Pennington, 50, of Lakeland, Nilda Rivera, 41, of Palm Coast, Jonathan Ruiz, 1, of Jacksonville and Kristin Ruiz, 25, of Palm Coast all died because of the crash.

FHP said Kristin Ruiz was the father of the 1-year-old.

FHP said traffic was being properly detoured from I-95 southbound to the exit of US 1.

Traffic was stopped awaiting the detour when a commercial vehicle approached the area and was not able to stop in time, hitting several vehicles from behind. Fire engulfed numerous vehicles.
