Two adults and two children are hurt when a deck collapses on a home on South Ponte Vedra Boulevard.
We’ve confirmed with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office that the family was from out of town and renting the home. SJSO says the family was on the deck to take a photo when the collapse happened. The fall was 9 to 10 feet.
There is no criminal investigation at this time.
The injuries are all considered minor, according to St. Johns Count Fire and Rescue.
St. Johns County Building Officer Howard White tells WOKV that their preliminary inspection finds the deck was not up to code. He says the work does not appear to have been permitted, and the end result would not have been approved, if it went through the proper channels.
White is grateful nobody was seriously hurt in the collapse, and plans to meet with the property owner to talk about the seriousness of the situation. He says more assessment must be done on the property, but if the current findings hold, the owner will likely face penalties.
Other people renting in the building are leaving as well. The portion of the deck that remains standing is roped off.
