Jacksonville, FL - Don’t be too concerned if you smell smoke around Ponte Vedra through tomorrow, several large prescribed burns are taking place.
On Wednesday, 265 acres near Baymeadows and the East Beltway are burning. While the wind will carry that smoke to Ponte Vedra, Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Annaleasa Winter tells us most of it shouldn’t be a problem for air quality.
“A lot of the smoke will life up in to the atmosphere and clear out and not stay low to the ground,” she says.
Thursday, the same prescribed burners will work on 600 acres very close to that same area, with similar smoke conditions expected.
“The smoke can be a real inconvenience, but it’s really much better of a circumstance than if it’s an uncontrolled wildfire that’s burning thousands of acres and threatening homes,” Winter says.
She says controlled burning helps reduce that risk by burning up potential fuel for wildfires in the area.
