St. Johns County, FL - We are staying in contact with the St. Johns Sheriff's Office following the discovery of human remains inside a burning vehicle in southwest St. Johns County.
The vehicle was discovered by a work crew Friday near Flagler Estates. A supervisor for the logging company called 911 and led police to the scene.
The vehicle was in a remote location off CR 13 South and Cowpen Branch Road.
When the vehicle was examined in the evidence processing facility, remains were located in the trunk. The Medical Examiner’s Office then determined those remains are human.
According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, the remains are so badly burned they may need to go through dental records or extract DNA from the person's bones.
"We are waiting for the medical examiner's office to determine the identity of the victim," Sergeant Catherine Payne told our partner Action News.
Over the weekend, detectives made some progress on tracking down the vehicle's owner.
"We do have information as far as the vehicle's owner, that is something detectives are following up on to see if they can locate the owner or anybody who has been in contact with that individual," said Payne.
Foul play is suspected in this case, and deputies are asking you to contact the Robbery Homicide Section or Crime Stoppers if you have any information.
