Suspect arrested in East Arlington murder

An argument over money leads to murder in East Arlington Tuesday.

JSO says they found 33-year-old Ferneze Jones dead with multiple gunshot wounds in a neighborhood near Atlantic and Girvin after 19-year-old Christopher Charles shot him multiple times in the chest with an assault rifle.

"They'd had an ongoing dispute for the past six months."

Lt. Rob Schoonover with JSO's homicide unit says after he was taken into custody Charles told police they had argued that day and Jones had threatened to come back and “chop the place up.”  After Jones left the first time, Charles told police he loaded his rifle in anticipation of Jones' return.

According to the police report Charles told police when Jones came back, he told him to get off his property before firing but noted he never saw Jones with any deadly weapons.

"Our victim did not have any weapon.  There was no physical contact, there was just a verbal, and that does not give [Charles] the right to open fire on an individual, even though he was on his property."

Charles was arrested last night and charged with murder.  He has been arrested in the past for battery and resisting arrest.
